Maritza Irene Pantoja and her husband Deybyd Gabriel’s farm, Pitiurco, nests on the slopes of the Galeras Volcano in the municipality of Consaça. The farm has been in Maritza’s family for generations and the name was given by her ancestors. Basically being born into coffee, Maritza learnt how to work with coffee, processing methods and the importance of drying coffee from a very young age.

In 2005 she started her own coffee production and in 2018, ventured into the specialty coffee fields. This decision was driven by better prices she could obtain and since then, has been able to provide education for her children and a better quality of life.

Pitiurco is a family venture, with Deybyd overseeing the fermentation process, her cousin manages drying and Maritza handles the administrative aspects. Maritza believes that the farm’s elevation and volcanic soils contribute to the quality of the coffee.
